Measurement Strategy & Connecting and Communicating Ideas

Initially we began the action research process by identifying an area that could improve our ability to orchestrate our innovation plan. Click to see my initial basic action research plan outline that helped determine what area I would need to address for my literature review.

In order to ensure our action research with aligned with current research in the field of education, I created a literature review. Click to see my literature review. In the literature review, I worked to find peer-reviewed research and literature that addressed mathematical conceptual understanding in the blended learning environment.

There was limited research on the topic. As a result, my action research will provide an interesting perspective on mathematical conceptual understanding in the blended learning environment, while trying to adjust the role of the teacher from “sage on the stage” to facilitator. The research study results will provide helpful and informative feedback regarding how to best support student conceptual understanding in the blended learning environment in the math classroom. Regardless of whether the results are positive or negative, the data will be able to help teachers make informed decisions regarding how to best support students’ understanding in the blended learning environment. It also can provide helpful insight regarding how to shift the role of teacher from sage on the stage to facilitator and the benefits and consequences of doing so. As a result of the final data results and feedback, the methodology can be improved for the next unit and subsequent school years.

Completing the study regarding conceptual understanding and blended learning will prove useful in determining how to move forward in blended learning research. The literature available regarding blended learning supports conceptual understanding. However further research is needed in order to determine how to enhance and promote deep, math conceptual understandings through blended learning. Students deserve research-informed mathematics instruction. With the rise in blended learning, working to support and research blended learning methodologies and exactly how to successfully facilitate blended learning will be necessary.
