Blended Learning Implementation Plan

The goal of this timeline is to successfully transition blended learning from math class, to other core content areas, and then to the entire middle school in the next 3 years.

*Students are currently unable to get up and move around the room due to current COVID-19 restrictions at our school. Eventually, we will start blended learning with station-rotation during my class once restrictions are loosened.

Timeline

January 2021-June 2021

  • Support student choice and teach students how to work with choice. This goes well with eventually getting to inquiry-based learning in math. It will help students learn to be self-motivated and to self-monitor during blended learning.
    • Provided Digital Choice Boards scaffolding work so students can understand where their knowledge should be before going on to the next options.
    • Implement a modified “station rotation model” (because students can’t get up and move around the room). Caitlin Tucker says, “In our current COVID reality, the “rotation” is not a physical shift to a different part of the classroom but a transition from one learning activity to the next” (Tucker, 2020)
      • Caitlin Tucker also says, “If the teacher is presenting information the same way for all students, that presentation would be more effective in a video” (Tucker, 2020). Recording the “notes” portion of my math class to allow for:
        • Student small groups through Google Meet breakout small groups using whiteboards.
        • Open-ended 5? pretest before each unit after finishing the test.
          • Group 1 (high need group)
            • Day 1
            • Hook & Mini Lesson- (20 min)
            • 1. connecting prior knowledge before allowing students to watch videos to learn about notes, (15 min)
            • 2. Watch notes video and follow along, (10 min)
            • Day 2
            • 3. Guided Practice/ Practice with IXL
            • 4. Work with me again on extension choice board / teacher pull small groups as needed
          • Group 2 (Middle-level)
            • Day 1
            • Hook & Mini Lesson- (20 min)
            • 1. watching notes and
            • 2. guided-practice with the teacher, then
            • Day 2
            • 3. practicing with IXL feedback,
            • 4. Extension choice board
          • Group 3 (High-level students)
            •  Day 1
            • Hook & Mini Lesson- (20 min)
            • 1. watching notes,
            • 2. practicing alone, and then
            • Day 2
            • 3. working with the teacher briefly before learning about extension activity.
            • 4. Extension choice board
      • Pre-test questions are also included on the summative assessment/ unit test so we can measure growth.

 June – May 2021

  • This data will be collected throughout the school year and then organized to be formally presented.
  • We must support our school culture of teachers. We want teachers failing forward with a growth mindset and learning, developing teachers’ PLNs, collaborating and trying new things. Help teachers’ behavior change and have them pursue PD independently, so they can develop a positive attitude about improving teaching practices
    • Participate in/ create staff book club- Over Blended by Horn & Staker, as well as possibly over books. (Will determine 1 of the 4 book options below after I finish reading all 4 books)
    • Read some of the books (listed above)  to learn more about how to plan for blended learning
    • Treasure Tuesday: Weekly mini presentation (1 hour CPE credits) about technology integration and emphasis on blending learning techniques in the classroom, provide snacks, let it be a community building event
      • Differentiate high ability & beginner ability learning sessions (separate depending on needs)
      • Ask different teachers about topics they could teach to the school
    • Develop skills of teachers who take special interest in what I am first doing in my classroom, and as a result, may want to join the Blended Learning team.
  • Personal contributions to PLN:
    • portfolio and Twitter
    • make connections through Twitter
    • Attend virtual conferences for ideas on presentations
  • Propose to attend and attend Ready to Blend Conference of some sort (or pay for it on my own) https://www.readytoblend.com/micros

April 2021- August 2021

  • Create and organize a blended learning team to implement wide-spread usage of blended learning details and logistics.
    • Blended learning team will be identified/ invited through professional development activities
  • Work with Blended Learning Team to implement station rotation model or other models of blended learning, depending on what they deem best for SMS students.
  • Use the Blended workbook to help create specific implementation plan for the school
  • Research best practices as a team

As Soon As Students Can Move Around the Classroom and Interact or 2021-2022 School Year

  • Station rotation model in my Digital Skills classroom in order to lead by example
  • Collect data from IOWA testing going from year to year
  • June 2021- talk to administration about extending blended learning further into the school (core content in middle school). Show data and re-evaluate the plan.

August 2021- July 2022

  • Host learning experiences for teachers
    • Blended learning- move to independent rotation model (if best fit for school, depending on data)
    • Learn and vet different programs/ applications for usage in blended learning environment with the Blended Learning Team
      • Look at progress, show students their progress using graphics and various representations.
        • Research best practices for data representations for students
  • Lead by example with team of planners
    • Students benefit from group of teachers implementing research-based practices
    • Teachers begin to display student success in classroom and to other teachers and community

August 2022- Forever

  • Use research to decide how there will be a school-wide implementation of blended learning in the classrooms
  • Continual reassessing and reflecting within PLCs and modifying teaching practices
  • Continual growth within PLN
  • Continual professional developments offered in an approachable and consistent fashion
